Kankakee County: 3 class X felony charges for career criminal

Brandon Thomas was charged with three class X felonies Wednesday for armed robbery of a Kankakee credit union earlier this week.

Thomas faces two counts of armed robbery with a firearm -- one for each SDC Employees Credit Union employee he allegedly ordered to hand over money. If convicted, each of those charges carry a sentence of 6 to 30 years, plus an added 15 years if a firearm was proven to have been used. He also faces 6 to 30 additional years if convicted of a third charge, that of being an armed habitual criminal.

According to court records, Thomas allegedly used a .357 Magnum revolver in Monday's heist.

Kankakee County Circuit Court Chief Judge Kathy Bradshaw-Elliott set his bond at $750,000. Bradshaw-Elliott allowed a motion by Thomas to receive a public defender.

Thomas has been sentenced to three years in prison four times since 1998. He's scheduled to be back in court Sept. 5 for an arraignment.

No charges have been filed against D'Andrae Washington, the other person arrested in connection with the incident.
