St. Anne's Jack Sikma, 7-time NBA All-Star, recognized during Seattle Seahawks game

Jack Sikma, perhaps the greatest athlete to call Kankakee County home, was honored over the weekend by the football team in the city where he spent the majority of his professional career.

A seven-time NBA All-Star with the Seattle SuperSonics, Sikma was recognized by the Seattle Seahawks before their win over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday at CenturyLink Field.

At the game, Sikma raised the 12th Man flag, a marketing campaign to recognize the team's fan support, in front of more than 68,000 fans. He was then interviewed as part of the TV broadcast.

Wearing a Seahawks jersey and holding an umbrella — it's Seattle, after all — he answered a few questions about the Seahawks' fortunes this season (they're 3-0 now) and whether or not he'd like to see his team return to the Pacific Northwest.

The Sonics relocated to Oklahoma City after the 2007-08 season.

"I would absolutely like to see that," he said. "It's too bad they're gone."

Sikma, a 6-foot-11 center, helped the Sonics win the NBA title in 1979 — the city's only professional sports championship.

Born in Kankakee, Sikma, 57, played at St. Anne Community High School, then Illinois Wesleyan University before being drafted in 1977. He spent 14 years in the NBA before having his No. 43 retired by the Sonics.

Skima currently serves as an assistant coach with the Minnesota Timberwolves. During the interview, Sikma said he was on his way to Minnesota on Sunday night. The team's training camp starts Oct. 1.

Sikma and his wife, Shawn, have three sons: Jacob, Luke and Nate. Nate is a junior on the University of Hartford (Conn.) basketball team. Luke played at the University of Portland (Ore.). They reside in the Seattle suburb of Bellevue.
