3 Tips for Purchasing a Firearm

Purchasing a firearm, especially for a first-time gun owner, can seem daunting. There are many different types of firearms, and the sheer number of different brands and models can be overwhelming. Here are 3 tips to help narrow down your choices and select a firearm that’s right for you.

  • Understand why you want to own a gun. Whether it will be used for home defense, concealed carry, hunting, or even just plinking, knowing the purpose of owning the gun will help you choose the best firearm. For example, a concealed-carry gun will often be a pistol that you can comfortably carry in a holster or a pocket. This will dictate the size and caliber of the gun. A hunter should decide his caliber based on the size of his quarry - pest control and big game hunting will have very different ammunition requirements.
  • Once you’ve narrowed down which type of firearm you want (e.g., a pistol/rifle/shotgun), you want to find the right balance between quality and price. First and foremost, a firearm should be reliable, so finding the right manufacturer is a priority. Research which types of guns are considered reliable for your application - when it comes to a self defense weapon, for example, find out which brands are used by law enforcement. On the other hand, if your firearm will only be used for recreational shooting, you may not need to spend as much.
  • Ask questions! FFL dealers will be happy to assist you with your purchase. Visiting a gun store to browse and hold different guns can give you a better idea of what feels right, and asking people in the business can help clear up any confusion you have between different guns, brands, ammo and even gun legislation.
