Stolen puppy: Tails Humane Society seeks public’s help after puppy stolen from DeKalb shelter

DeKALB – Tails Humane Society is seeking help from the public to find a two-month-old puppy the shelter reported stolen Saturday.

According to a social media post Saturday, Queen Anne, a two-month-old female mixed breed puppy was taken from the shelter Saturday evening, although it’s unclear how the puppy was taken. Details surrounding the incident are not publicly known at this time.

Rachael Forren said Sunday she and her family were set to adopt Queen Anne, and went to pick the puppy up from the shelter with her kids Saturday when they were told she was gone.

“This was supposed to be my puppy,” Forren posted to Tails’ social media post over the weekend. “My kids are devastated. I went to pick her up today and she was nowhere to be found. Please help find her! We would love to be able to bring her home!”

Forren told the Daily Chronicle Sunday that while she’s hopeful Queen Anne will be found, she doesn’t know that she will be. She said she was told by Tails staff that if the puppy isn’t found by Thursday, they’ve arranged for her family to get first choice out of two litters coming into the shelter Thursday afternoon.

Tails Humane Society staff posted they’re seeking the public’s help to find the puppy, and that any tips can be anonymous and confidential by calling 815-758-2457 ext. 102 or emailing info@tailshumanesociety.org.

“Due to the sensitive nature of this investigation, we will not be responding to comments on this post as this is an ongoing situation and is currently under investigation,” according to the post.

Forren said the shelter was open Saturday at the time when Queen Anne was stolen, and said staff told her they believe the puppy may have been taken by someone who got past staff inside the facility.

“They told me someone sketchy was asking about my puppy and they told them she was adopted,” Forren said. “They think they asked about another dog and while they were getting that one, the other guy snuck mine out in his hoodie.”

When asked to comment on the incident, Michelle Groeper, executive director of Tails, said “We can’t release information about adopters or those doing business with Tails unfortunately.”

Queen Anne recently was spayed and microchipped, and is golden and tan in color, weighing about 11.5 pounds.
