SYCAMORE – A suspected bank robber is at large after Heartland Bank in downtown Sycamore was targeted Wednesday by the man who threatened employees and escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash, said Sycamore Police Chief Jim Winters.

Police are requesting the public’s help in their search, according to a news release from the Sycamore Police Department. Police released video surveillance photos from the incident Wednesday, which show a hooded man dressed in all black inside the bank.

Sycamore police responded to a call at 2:05 p.m. Wednesday for a report of a bank robbery at Heartland Bank, 124 S. Main St. Winters said the 911 call came from employees inside the bank, but by the time police arrived minutes later, the man was gone.

Winters declined to say how much cash was taken.

Police were told a man with his face covered came into the bank and used a note to demand cash from bank staff. It’s unclear whether the man had a weapon, police said.

“There was no weapon displayed by the suspect,” Winters said. “Thankfully nobody was injured. He fled the bank in an unknown direction and we’re following up on a couple possible vehicles.”

Winters said the lobby of Heartland Bank was closed to the public briefly Wednesday while police conducted an investigation.

DeKalb County Sheriff’s deputies assisted. Winters said Sycamore police are working with DeKalb police to determine whether the accused robber has any connections to neighboring crime in the area.

No arrest has yet been made.

Sycamore police investigators are urging anyone who may have seen anything or has information related to the incident to call police at 815-895-2123 or DeKalb County Crime Stoppers at 815-895-3272. Callers may also request to remain anonymous and can receive a cash reward of up to $1,000.

This is a developing story and may be updated as more information becomes available.
