SYCAMORE – A Sycamore man is facing charges after allegedly not notifying Sycamore police of his change of address as a registered sex offender after he moved more than a year ago.
Kevin L. Hunter, 30, of the 2500 block of Laurel Lane in Sycamore was arrested and charged with unlawful failure to register as a sex offender, a Class 3 felony. If convicted, Hunter could face up to five years in prison.
According to DeKalb County court documents, Sycamore police received a tip Jan. 18 that Hunter was living at the Laurel Lane address and was not properly registered within the Illinois State Police Sex Offender Registry. Police allege a note of sale for the mobile home dated Nov. 30, 2020, was sold to Kevin Hunter.
“A neighbor ... also stated Hunter has been living at the above address for at least one year,” according to court documents.
Hunter requested to be given a recognizance bond, meaning he could be released with his signature and not have to post money to get out of jail.
“I’m not a flight risk,” Hunter said in court Wednesday.
Twenty-third Circuit Court Judge Marcy Buick said in open court Wednesday that Hunter’s address was listed in Sycamore in court documents, but according to Hunter’s affidavit, he has been living in Aurora for the past two years.
“I think there is a discrepancy here,” Buick said in addressing Hunter. “I don’t know what your address is, and that causes me great concern.”
Buick set bond for Hunter at $15,000. He would need to post $1,500 to be released from jail.
Hunter is due back in court at 10 a.m. Feb 1.
