One dead after car, semi crash in Sycamore Township, says sheriff

SYCAMORE TOWNSHIP - A woman died Tuesday after a crash involving a car and two semi-trailer trucks along Peace Road in Sycamore Township, said DeKalb County Sheriff Andy Sullivan.

The crash happened around 10:30 a.m., and left a woman dead and two others injured. No one has been identified by officials yet as of 6 p.m. Tuesday, pending notification of next of kin, Sullivan said.

First responders to the scene saw a heavily damaged silver car in the roadway and a semi-tractor truck in the ditch nearby, according to a news release from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.

Peace Road was temporarily closed for several hours Tuesday between Route 64 and Freed Road near the Kishwaukee River as crews worked to clear the debris from the crash which occurred on Peace Road south of Freed Road, Sullivan said.

“It’s still under investigation, and we’re conducting traffic control,” Sullivan said around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. “A passenger car was driving northbound on Peace Road and was eventually struck by a southbound semi-tractor trailer. The semi was hauling beverages. There was another semi behind that was also struck by some debris.”

The woman, pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, was the driver of the car.

Two others - the driver of the semi-trailer struck directly by the car, and a passenger in that semi - were transported to Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital in DeKalb with non life-threatening injuries, Sullivan said. One was treated and released from the hospital Tuesday, and the other remains undergoing care.

“It appears at this time that the passenger car was passing vehicles on the right, lost control and then was struck,” Sullivan said.

Sheriff’s officials remained on the scene for hours while crews worked to get the vehicles removed and the road cleaned. The roadway was cleared as of 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Officials from the Sycamore police and fire departments and the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office auxiliary assisted. No arrests were reported in the crash.

The crash remains under investigation by the sheriff’s office and the DeKalb County Coroner’s Office.
