DeKALB – A DeKalb man is facing charges after he was arrested this week and charged in a home invasion during which police said he attacked a person inside and stole money and a cellphone.

Darien D. Ross, 22, of the 800 block of Edgebrook Drive in DeKalb was arrested March 17 on an outstanding warrant and charged with home invasion, a Class X felony and aggravated robbery, a Class 1 felony. He also was charged with battery, a Class A misdemeanor, and had multiple warrants for failing to appear in court on other previous cases, according to DeKalb County court officials.

If convicted of the Class X felony, Ross could face up to 30 years in prison.

According to DeKalb County court documents, Ross allegedly broke into a home in the 300 block of Gurler Street, knowing there was an occupant inside and intentionally struck the person in the head.

Ross allegedly told the occupant “he had a firearm” and “knowingly took property from [them],” which included money and a cell phone, “by the use of force,” according to court documents.

Ross appeared for a virtual bond hearing Friday from the DeKalb County Jail. DeKalb County Judge Joseph Pedersen appointed the county’s public defender’s office to represent Ross.

According to DeKalb County sheriff’s officials, Ross’s arrest warrant bond was set at $263,000, meaning Ross would have to pay $26,300 to be released from jail. The total bond amount included the new charges, an old 2018 felony attempted armed robbery charge and an old misdemeanor charge against Ross.

Pedersen kept Ross’s bond at the arrest warrant amount. If he were to post bail, Ross would also be placed on an electronic home monitoring device and prohibited to contact the home invasion victim.

Ross is due back in court at 2:30 p.m. March 30.
