Aurora man arrested after 120 mph DeKalb police chase on freeway

DeKALB – An Aurora man is facing charges after DeKalb police said he refused to let a woman out of his car and drove more than 120 mph down an expressway to flee from law enforcement.

Deandre O. Mitchell, 29, of the 1500 block of Hollycrest Avenue in Aurora was booked Saturday at the DeKalb County Jail and charged with aggravated fleeing and eluding from police and unlawful restraint, both Class 4 felonies. If convicted of either charge, Mitchell could face up to three years in prison.

According to DeKalb County court documents, police were called at 11:38 p.m. March 11 for a report of a domestic dispute. Police said the caller told dispatchers she was locked in a car with Mitchell and he refused to let her out. The woman provided a description of the Chevrolet Impala and police found it in the 1100 block of West Hillcrest Drive in DeKalb.

“Officers attempted a traffic stop on the vehicle and the suspect vehicle fled, leading officers on a high speed pursuit that ended in Aurora,” according to court documents.

Mitchell was arrested after a short foot chase following the high-speed car pursuit, according to court records. Police said Mitchell fled in the vehicle while “exceeding speeds of 120 mph on the expressway” and that Mitchell also had several warrants out for his arrest in other counties, according to records.

Mitchell previously was convicted out of Boone County for similar fleeing felony charges issued in 2020, according to court documents. Mitchell, who appeared for a virtual bond hearing in front of DeKalb County Judge Joseph Pedersen on Monday, said he also has pending cases in Kane and DuPage counties.

Pedersen set a $50,000 bond for Mitchell, meaning he would have to pay $5,000 to get out of DeKalb County Jail. However, prosecutors said Mitchell recently was ordered to service eight years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for a Boone County conviction, so if he were to post bail, he would not be freed from policy custody.

“It’s just a question of where he’s going to sleep at night,” DeKalb County Assistant State’s Attorney Daniel Regna said.

Mitchell is due back in DeKalb County court at 10 a.m. April 11 for an arraignment hearing.
