High school sports roundup for Thursday, June 3

Crystal Haack and Maddy Bellah each had three hits, and Hiawtha’s softball team held off visiting Polo, 8-6, to capture the two teams’ Class 1A regional semifinal on Thursday.

The Hawks built an 8-1 lead before Polo scored five runs in the sixth inning. Haack had a double and an RBI, while Bellah knocked in four runs. Naomi Langley and Grace Bolin were both 2 for 4 with an RBI.

Brooke Braden earned the complete-game win, allowing no earned runs while striking out 12.

Harlem 6, DeKalb 1: At Harlem, the Barbs’ season ended in their Class 4A regional final.

Cheyenne Nietz hit a three-run homer in the first inning for Harlem and also earned the win.

GIRLS TRACK

Class 1A Seneca Sectional: Indian Creek will send six qualifiers to the Class 1A State Tournament next week.

Brook Probst won the high jump, clearing 1.61 meters. Probst also took second in the triple jump with a leap of 9.79. Reagan Gibson and Caroline Bend cleared 3.28 meters and 2.74 meters to take second and fourth, respectively, in the pole vault.

Bend also qualified in the 3,200-meter run, taking second in 12:29.6 behind teammate Jolee Larson, who won and qualified in 12:15.06.

WRESTLING

Kaneland wins twice: At Morris, the Knights defeated Morris, 61-12, and Sandwich, 35-31.

Against the host school, Kaneland received win from Alex Orrala, Cameron Phillips, Ella Kuffel, Dean Baldridge, Caden Grabowski, Christian Duffing, Lane Robinson, Jack Yore, Jack Certa, Miles Ripper and Nate Diaz.

Against Sandwich, Kamron Scholl, Philips, Duffing, Robinson, Grant Baldridge, Yore, Certa, Ripper and Diaz recorded wins.
