One death, 44 new COVID-19 cases in county on Friday as long-term care outbreaks continue to grow

Also: 243 more recoveries this week

SYCAMORE – Lincolnshire Place in Sycamore reported one new death and DeKalb County Rehabilitation and Nursing Center increased by almost 30 cases in new coronavirus numbers released by the county Friday.

The death was a man in his 80s, the 87th in the county. The 44 new cases reported by the DeKalb County Health Department bring the total to 7,469.

DeKalb County Rehab reported five new cases in staff and 22 in residents, bringing the total to 64 cases at the long-term care facility. The facility reported 15 cases on Thursday.

The county also released new recovery and testing data. An additional 243 residents recovered from the virus this past week, bringing the total number of recoveries to 6,486.

There have been 88,716 total tests run in the county and there remain 896 active cases.

According to state data, 2,806 doses of the vaccine have been administered to DeKalb County residents either in the county or at another location, and 510 residents have been fully vaccinated as of Jan. 15.

The seven-day rolling positivity rate in the county fell to 9.2%. The positivity rate for Region 1, which includes DeKalb County, Winnebago and west to Whiteside, dropped to 8.1%.

By the numbers

There currently are seven long-term care facilities in outbreak mode in DeKalb County.

DeKalb County Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in DeKalb has reported 64 cases (39 staff and 25 residents), Oak Crest-DeKalb Area Retirement Center in DeKalb has reported 58 cases (27 staff and 31 residents with one death) and Bethany Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in DeKalb has reported 109 cases (46 staff and 63 residents with nine deaths). Prairie Crossing Living and Rehabilitation Center in Shabbona has reported 88 cases (34 staff and 54 residents with seven deaths). Lincolnshire Place in Sycamore has reported 47 cases (17 staff and 30 residents with eight deaths), and Willow Crest Nursing Pavilion in Sandwich has reported eight cases (five employees and three residents). Pine Acres in DeKalb has 10 cases(five staff and five residents).

Some facilities are not designated long-term care by the county but are by the Illinois Department of Public Health. Opportunity House in Sycamore reported four new cases, with 36 cases on the state website during the facility’s second documented outbreak, while Avancer Home in Genoa had 13 cases and one death as of Jan. 15, the same as the week prior.

There have been 1,220 cases in DeKalb County residents 19 or younger, 1,756 in their 20s, 1,123 in their 30s, 1,055 in their 40s, 962 in their 50s, 642 in their 60s, 371 in their 70s and 340 in their 80s or older.

To date, there have been 50 deaths reported in DeKalb County residents in their 80s or older, 14 in their 70s, 13 in their 60s, five in their 50s, three in their 40s, one in their 30s and one infant.

According to county data, DeKalb has seen between 3,181 and 3,185 cases. There are between 1,541 and 1,545 cases in Sycamore; 666 and 670 in Sandwich and Plano (listed as one region on the site); 611 and 615 in Genoa; 326 and 330 cases in Cortland; 186 and 190 cases in Kirkland; 176 and 180 Hinckley; 171 and 175 in Kingston; 136 and 140 cases in Somonauk; 101 and 105 in Shabbona; 96 to 100 in Waterman; 91 and 95 in Malta ; 51 and 55 in Maple Park; 16 and 20 in Clare; 11 and 15 in Earlville; and six and 10 in Esmond, Lee and Leland. Marengo and Rochelle each report between one and five cases.

The DeKalb County website only lists residents who live within county lines for a municipality, while the IDPH website lists everyone within a certain ZIP code. Numbers also may vary because of data lags.

The 60115 ZIP code, including DeKalb, had 3,094 cases reported and 43,855 tests administered (a positivity rate of 7.1%); the 60178 ZIP code, including Sycamore, had 1,555 cases and 16,473 tests (9.4%); the 60111 ZIP code, including Clare, reported 18 cases and 176 tests (10.2%); the 60112 ZIP code, including Cortland, had 321 cases and 3,329 tests (9.6%); the 60135 ZIP code, including Genoa, had 611 cases and 5,043 tests (12.1%); the 60145 ZIP code, including Kingston, had 164 cases and 1,363 tests (12%); the 60146 ZIP code, including Kirkland, had 207 cases and 1,829 tests (11.3%); the 60150 ZIP code, including Malta, had 84 cases and 1,114 tests (7.5%); the 60151 ZIP code, including parts of Maple Park in both DeKalb and Kane counties, had 252 cases and 2,564 tests (9.8%); the 60520 ZIP code, including Hinckley, had 177 cases and 1,854 tests (9.5%); the 60548 ZIP code, including Sandwich, had 1,001 cases and 10,152 tests (9.9%); the 60550 ZIP code, including Shabbona, had 109 cases and 1,072 tests (10.2%); and the 60556 ZIP code, including Waterman, had 91 cases and 1,011 tests (9%).

The IDPH reported 1,059,324 people in Illinois have tested positive for COVID-19, while 18,049 people have died statewide. There have been 14,564,776 tests performed.

Mitigations across DeKalb County also changed Friday, with Tier 3 regulations lifted to allow for the reopening of group fitness classes, some youth recreational sports, museums and video gaming facilities. Indoor dining is still prohibited according to the Restore Illinois plan, though Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker released more details Friday detailing how limited indoor dining could reopen.

In order to return to Tier 1 mitigations, a region much meet the following criteria: a regional positivity rate less than 8% for three consecutive days and 20% or more ICU and hospital beds available regionwide and no sustained increases of hospitalizations for seven out of 10 days in the region.

Though DeKalb County’s region’s positivity rate hasn’t fallen below 8% since before Oct. 3, when indoor dining was prohibited again, the region’s rate as of Friday, Jan. 15, is 8.1%..
