Chicago man accused of armed robbery, stealing a bag of weed from woman at gunpoint

SYCAMORE — A Chicago man and an accomplice have been accused of stealing a bag of marijuana from a woman at gunpoint, police said.

Willie D. Montgomery, 18, of the 6500 block of South Laflin Street in Chicago, was charged with armed robbery and aggravated robbery following the incident which police said occurred last week. If convicted of the most serious crime, armed robbery, a Class X felony, Montgomery could face up to 30 years in jail and fines up to $25,000. He was arrested on a warrant for the charges on Oct. 1, records show.

According to DeKalb County court records, police were called to the 900 block of Spiros Court shortly after 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 29. Upon arrival, officers spoke with a DeKalb woman, who told police two men robbed her at gunpoint, and stole a bag of marijuana from her.

During a virtual circuit court bond hearing from DeKalb County Jail in front of Circuit Court Judge Joseph Voiland on Monday, Montgomery’s bond was set at $150,000. He would need to post $15,000 to be released from jail.

During the hearing, Assistant State’s Attorney Brooks Locke cited Montgomery’s criminal history, and said the 18-year-old has two prior gun-related arrests from earlier in the year and a pending stolen vehicle charge. According to DeKalb County court records, which show records for those 18 or older, Montgomery has no convictions on current adult charges locally.

“Based upon the nature of this offense being armed robbery and the use of a gun, we believe he is a danger and ask that bond stand,” Locke said.

Public Defender Thomas McCulloch, who represented Montgomery in the hearing, said he would “stand on the bond report that’s in the file.”

Records show Montgomery was arrested Aug. 30 after an incident the day before in which he’s charged with possession of a firearm without a valid Firearm Owner’s Identification Card, unlawful use of a weapon, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, resisting a police officer, illegal possession of ammunition, obstructing identification. He was out on bond at the time of the alleged armed robbery, with records showing he was given a $5,000 recognizance bond during an Aug. 30 hearing in front of Judge Phillip Montgomery on the August firearm charges.

Montgomery is expected to appear for a status hearing on the charges Oct. 18 at 2:30 p.m.
