Winter Weather Preparedness Month

November is Winter Weather Preparedness Month in Illinois.

Although autumn is still in full swing, the weather can start to turn on short notice, bringing snow, ice, and freezing temperatures. To help residents get ready, Winter Weather Preparedness Month is designed to share resources and information to ensure your safety.

Here are some general tips to be aware of as the cold and unpredictable weather approaches.

Winter weather tips for home

In the event of a winter storm, you may be forced to stay home for long periods of time until the weather passes. If so, it’s important to make sure you’re prepared. Winterize your home ahead of time by making sure your attic, walls, windows, and doors are all insulated properly. Cover your windows with plastic if necessary. Make sure your home’s heating system has been professionally checked and is functioning correctly. This includes using space heaters which can help decrease heating bills and add another heating source in any home. Also, make sure you have plenty of food, water, and emergency supplies such as flashlights, radios, and appropriate clothing on hand.

It is also important to know that even as the COVID-19 pandemic continues, cold and flu season is set to begin with the onset of winter. It is more important than ever to take precautions for your health, and of those around you. Maintain good nutrition and get proper rest. Drink plenty of water and wash your hands often.

Winter weather tips for travel

In the event(s) you must travel during extreme cold or snow, there are a few important things to check before hitting the road. Plan your trip(s) carefully, and allow for extra time due to road conditions, other travelers, and the weather itself. Make sure your vehicle is in good working condition and don’t travel past your vehicle’s ability to navigate through snow and ice.

Plan ahead and stay informed

It is always a good idea to have a plan in place for you and your family should an emergency occur. Have a supply kit at the ready just in case, and pay attention to any emergency broadcasts on your local news sources and radio stations. Talk with your neighbors and friends in the community about being active and ready to help in unexpected situations. Taking these steps beforehand will help you be prepared if an emergency situation arises.
