PC, Newman and Rockridge advance to sectional finals

Rockets beats Eureka, will meet Farmington in Mendota Sectional finals

Putnam County and two Three Rivers Conference teams advanced to Friday’s sectional championship games with victories in Wednesday’s semifinals.

The area trio moves on to the Sweet 16 to play for sectional championships Friday night.

Class 1A Streator Woodland Sectional

Putnam County 56, Chicago Fenger 46: The No. 3 seed Panthers took down the No. 1 Titans in Wednesday’s sectional semifinals. Jackson McDonald (20) and Austin Mattingly (17) combined for 37 points for PC.

The Panthers (21-14) will face Yorkville Christian (22-13), the No. 1 ranked team in Class 1A featuring Duke recruit Jaden Schutt, in Friday’s championship game at 7 p.m. at South Streator.

Class 1A Pecatonica Sectional

Newman 57, South Beloit 38: The No. 5 Comets toppled No. 1 South Beloit in Wednesday’s sectional semifinals at Pecatonica. Marcus Williams had a game-high 30 points for the Comets.

The Comets (24-9) will face top-seeded Scales Mound (35-2), the No. 2 ranked team in 1A, in Friday’s finals at 7 p.m.

Class 2A Mendota Sectional

Rockridge 55, Eureka 48: No. 3 seed Rockridge upset No. 1 Eureka in Wednesday’s sectional semifinals at Mendota. The Rockets (24-6) will face No. 1 Farmington (25-7), which beat Princeton, 65-56, Tuesday night, in Friday’s championship game at 7 p.m.

Rockridge and Farmington are former Olympic Conference rivals.
