Bears quarterback Justin Fields dealing with minor ankle injury

Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields drops back during the second half against the Minnesota Vikings on Monday, Dec. 20, 2021, in Chicago.

Quarterback Justin Fields tweaked his ankle in Monday’s loss to the Minnesota Vikings, but the Bears are hopeful he will play Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks.

Fields was limited in practice Wednesday. Bears coach Matt Nagy said Fields first mentioned the injury Tuesday, the morning after the game. The quarterback said he tweaked it in the second quarter Monday.

“When you’re playing in the game, you got a bunch of adrenaline going on and stuff,” Fields said. “So, that’s when I first felt it, but I was still good enough to play through it. Of course, it got worse after the game and the next morning. But it felt better [Wednesday] morning.”

Fields noted that he expects to play Sunday, but the Bears will take it day by day.

Backup quarterback Andy Dalton remains on the COVID-19 list. Third-string quarterback Nick Foles is on the active roster, and the team signed quarterback Ryan Willis to the practice squad last week.

Fields already was playing with three broken ribs, an injury that causes him some minor discomfort when he throws. Nagy doesn’t expect Fields to miss any game action because of the new ankle injury.

“I don’t see it being that way, but again, you always want to be smart, and we’re going to be that way, just like we treat every injury with every player,” Nagy said. “We’ll be more cautious than anything to make sure that every day and every hour that passes that he’s feeling better.”

Transactions: The Bears activated three players from the COVID-19 list: right tackle Larry Borom, safety Eddie Jackson and outside linebacker Sam Kamara. They also added tight end Jesper Horsted to the COVID-19 list.

The Bears have 11 players on the COVID-19 list. Offensive coordinator Bill Lazor and special teams coordinator Chris Tabor remain out because of COVID-19 protocols.

Injury update: In addition to Fields, who was limited, receiver Marquise Goodwin (foot) was limited in practice Wednesday.

Defensive back Xavier Crawford (concussion), receiver Jakeem Grant (concussion) and left tackle Jason Peters (ankle) did not participate.

Defensive tackle Eddie Goldman (finger), receiver Darnell Mooney (ankle), linebacker Roquan Smith (hamstring) and defensive tackle Khyiris Tonga (shoulder) were full participants despite injuries.

Wednesday’s injury report was an estimate because practice was a walk-through.
