Huntley High School mourns loss of student who died Tuesday

The body of a 17-year-old Huntley girl was found about 5 p.m. Tuesday near Sunset Park in Lake in the Hills, police said, adding that no threat to public safety existed in relation to the death.

Huntley School District 158 Superintendent Scott Rowe issued a statement Wednesday that mourned the loss of Huntley High School student Shannon Daly who died Tuesday.

A representative from Huntley High School spoke with Daly’s family, who gave the district permission to issue a statement regarding her death, district spokesman Dan Armstrong said Wednesday.

“They were supportive of informing the school because they knew that her classmates would benefit from knowing that and being informed about the counseling and grief management resources available,” he said.

The district sent a notice to Huntley High School students and then to parents so that they could be available to support their students with any emotions they may be dealing with, Armstrong said.

“When a school community loses one of its young people, the pain touches us all,” Rowe said in the statement.

The district encouraged students and staff to support one another and to make use of emotional support resources, such as the McHenry County Crisis Line that offers help to anyone feeling depressed or having thoughts of suicide. The hotline can be reached at 800-892-8900.

The county’s McHELP App offers mental health support from licensed professionals through texts or phone calls. The McHELP App can be downloaded from the Apple App Store or Google Play.

The McHenry County Mental Health Board website also has a full-service directory with counseling and mental health support options across the county.

“Please help us honor Shannon’s memory by uniting and supporting each other with love, empathy, and sympathy during this most harrowing of times, and please reach out for support whenever needed,” Rowe said in the statement.
