Chicago woman tried to disarm cop in Wilmington Township: records

A Chicago woman has been charged with attempting to take a firearm away from a police officer, fleeing an officer and leaving the scene of an accident in Wilmington Township, court records show.

About 7 p.m. Sept. 25, Alexis Bonaparte, 25, of the 4800 block of South Indiana Avenue was arrested and taken to the Will County jail on charges of disarming a police officer, fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, leaving the scene of an accident, failure to reduce speed, unsafe backing on a roadway, operating an uninsured motor vehicle and disregarding a traffic control device.

A criminal complaint alleged Bonaparte “attempted to take” a firearm from a man known to her to be a police officer while he was “engaged in the performance of his official duties,”

Bonaparte was driving a 2019 Jeep Trailhawk north on Route 53 near Coal City Road when she was cited for fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer and leaving the scene of an accident, court records show.

Bonaparte was taken to the Will County jail following her arrest.

On Sept. 26, Judge Art Smigielski set Bonaparte’s bond at $20,000 after finding a “reasonable basis for the warrantless arrest,” according to court records.

On Sept. 29, Judge Brian Barrett determined prosecutors overcame “the presumption of a non-monetary bond” and ordered Bonaparte’s $20,000 bond to remain at that amount and cover her other traffic cases, court records show.

Bonaparte will need to post $2,000 for her release from jail.

Her case is scheduled for a preliminary hearing Thursday.
