The Will County Sheriff's Office SWAT team broke down the front door of an East Jackson Street home and captured three gunmen who had barricaded themselves inside and tried waiting them out for hours, police said.

Deputies first responded to a report of gunshots in the area of Siegmund Street between fourth and Fifth avenues shortly after 7 p.m., according to a statement released Sunday by the sheriff's office.

The deputies "observed gunfire damage to a house, and seven spent firearm shell casings," police said, and a witness told them of a red Mitsubishi or Pontiac with a loud exhaust system fleeing the area.

A speeding car fitting that description was spotted nearby, police said, and a deputy attempted to pull it over.

The car kept going, police said, and three occupants bailed out and made a run for it, cutting through yards until they made it to the residence on Jackson between between Fairbanks Avenue and Hebbard Street in Joliet Township.

Deputies surrounded the house and attempted to make contact with the fugitives inside, police said.

"The suspects refused to exit the residence," police said, "and the standoff continued for many more hours."

The sheriff's office obtained a search warrant and — after a final attempt to make contact with the occupants of the residence — the SWAT team "deployed a distraction device and breached the front door of the residence," police said. "Instructions were given to the occupants to vacant the residence, to which they complied."

Three men — Joseph Asbury-Butler, 22, Ricardo Barrios-Reyes, 26, and Miguel Barrios-Zacarias, 29 — all were arrested on probable cause of obstructing Justice, aggravated fleeing and Eluding, aggravated discharge of a firearm, and reckless conduct, according to police.

Barrios-Zacarias also was wanted on a burglary warrant, according to police.

Asbury-Butler, Barrios-Reyes and and Miguel Barrios-Zacarias all were transported to the Will County jail. The three men were scheduled to appear in court Monday afternoon for hearings on their continued detention and bonds.
