Letter: Lily Lake Road issues are about speed

To the Editor:

Regarding the current construction work on Lily Lake Road, I believe the hills and curves have contributed to the accidents on it.

But the underlying problem is speed. I’ve lived on Lily Lake over 20 years. The north end from Wegner to Route 120 is part of Lakemoor and monitored by their police department.

The speed limit posted is 30 mph. The southern section of Lily Lake, where most of your accidents have happened from Wegner to South River Road, is unincorporated McHenry County and completely unmonitored in regards to speed. The posted speed limit on the southern section is 40 mph.

Since I’ve lived here, I can count on one hand the times I have seen a sheriff’s car watching the road for speed. None of the accidents mentioned in the article were head-on crashes due to not seeing over a hill.

They were speed related and loss of car control due to the curves. Many people do not follow the posted speed limit and are speeding even now on rough constuction road surfaces.

I believe that once the road is finished people will speed even more as they know that they can get away with it.
