A 17-year-old was killed in a crash in Plainfield on Friday after he drove on Van Dyke Road at a high speed, lost control of the vehicle, and struck two utility poles, according to police.
The victim of the crash was identified as Jaden Sherman, of the 13100 block of Taylor Street, Plainfield, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.
At about 5:30 p.m, Plainfield police and firefighters responded to the area of Van Dyke Road and Shagbark Drive for the crash, according to a news release from Plainfield police Cmdr. Anthony Novak.
When the officers arrived, they discovered a single-vehicle crash involving a BMW with an extensive amount of damage, police said.
Sherman, the driver of the BMW, who was the only occupant, was taken to Rush Copley Medical Center in Aurora, police said. He was then taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, where he succumbed to his injuries.
A preliminary investigation of the crash indicated that the BMW was traveling in the northbound lane of Van Dyke Road just north of 127th Street at a high speed, police said.
Sherman passed another vehicle, lost control, and struck the utility poles, police said.
Staff with the Plainfield Emergency Management Agency assisted with keeping the roadway closed for several hours while an investigation was conducted. The area has since been opened.
The traffic crash remains under investigation, police said.
