Chicago man arrested after robbing Verizon store in Mokena: cops

A Chicago man has been apprehended in connection with a robbery at a Verizon store in Mokena, police said.

Antione Fulton, 22, of the 5400 block of South Carpenter Street is one of two men who robbed the store Feb. 6, said Mokena Police Chief Steve Vaccaro.

Fulton and the other man, who has not been arrested, came into the store at 19200 S. La Grange Road and took a “number of items,” including wallets and cellphones from people who were inside, Vaccaro said. The two men grabbed a garbage can to store all the stolen items, he said.

After the robbery, the two men fled the scene in a stolen white Volkswagen but not before crashing into another vehicle in the parking lot, he said. The Volkswagen was later recovered in Chicago, he said.

The Mokena Police Department worked with other local and federal law enforcement agencies to investigate the incident, Vaccaro said. Through the investigation, officers were able to identify Fulton as one of the suspects, he said.

On July 8, Judge Theodore Jarz signed a warrant for Fulton’s arrest, court records show. The warrant carried a $50,000 bond.

Fulton was charged with stealing cellphones from two Verizon employees “by use of force or threatening the imminent use of force,” according to the criminal complaint.

Fulton was also charged with stealing an Apple Watch and wallet from the employees as well, the complaint said.

On Thursday, Fulton was able to post the $5,000 he needed for his release from the Will County jail.

Fulton’s next court date is Aug. 13.
