DeKALB – Police say Jimmy D. Edwards, 32, of the 400 block of Charter St. in DeKalb, is responsible for the murder of 29-year-old Chrishun Keeler-Tyus but he did not pull the trigger.

A bond call hearing for the DeKalb man charged with murder was continued until next Monday to give his lawyer more time to review a request to deny his bail.

Edwards and his wife, Katrina L. Edwards, 35, of DeKalb, charged with obstructing justice, were arrested Tuesday in connection to a Fourth of July double shooting over the weekend, which occurred around 2 p.m. in the parking lot of a FasMart, 933 S. Fourth St. Police said Katrina Edwards got into an argument with Keeler-Tyus inside the FasMart, and then called her husband.

"Yes, the Edwards are the couple," DeKalb Acting Police Chief Bob Redel said Wednesday. "Katrina was the person who called her husband, Jimmy, to the scene. The shooter is not in custody at this time."

Police believe a third person, who arrived in the parking lot of FasMart shortly after Jimmy Edwards did, pulled the trigger, shooting two including Keeler-Tyus, who later died from his gunshot wounds at Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital. The identity of the second gunshot victim is unknown though they did not sustain life-threatening injuries, police said,

Both Edwards appeared in front of DeKalb County Circuit Court Judge Robbin Stuckert for a bond hearing Wednesday. Stuckert released Katrina Edwards on a $5,000 recognizance bond, and she's set to appear for a status hearing Aug. 28 at 10:30 a.m. in courtroom 210.

If convicted, Katrina Edwards faces up six years in jail and fines up to $2,500.

Jimmy Edwards, who faces 35 years to life in jail, will remain in custody with no bond through Monday at 1 p.m., when it's expected he will go before Stuckert again for another hearing, at which time she will review a request by the DeKalb County State's Attorney's office to deny Edwards' bail.

An investigation by the DeKalb County Major Case squad pieced together more of what led to the deadly shooting in on a holiday afternoon Saturday.

Keeler-Tyus was inside the FasMart when he and Katrina Edwards had a disagreement, according to DeKalb County court records. Katrina Edwards then called her husband on her cell phone to assist her at the FasMart, police said, after which Keeler-Tyus exited the store and walked back to his car, which was parked by a gas pump.

Jimmy Edwards then arrived in the parking lot at FasMart, parked and exited his car. Another dark colored vehicle then pulled into the FasMart parking lot and several gunshots came from the car, hitting Keeler-Tyus, police said.

According to court records, Katrina Edwards lied to a DeKalb police detective when she said she did not have any knowledge about the whereabouts of the the shooter's vehicle.

The car where the gunshots came from then fled the scene traveling northbound on South Fourth Street. Police later found that car in Aurora and took it for evidence, the release states.

Police expect more arrests to be forthcoming, as the investigation is still underway. Police are asking anyone with information related to the shooting to call the department at 815-748-8400.
