Oswego East, Oswego High School graduation ceremonies postponed again

Administrators working on alternative plans

Citing guidance from the DeKalb County Health Department, Northern Illinois University has announced that no large events will be held on campus prior to Aug. 1, effectively canceling the tentative June 27 graduation date for Oswego High School and Oswego East High School.

In a letter sent to seniors and their families Friday, April 24, OSD 308 Superintendent Dr. John Sparlin confirmed the cancellation and praised the "resiliency" of the Class of 2020, as their school year approaches its end.

"We know this is a very challenging time for you, and things are not going as you'd hope they would in your final weeks of high school. However, the resiliency you've shown is heartwarming and speaks to the strength and character of our students, families, and community," Sparlin wrote.

"Last week, we communicated to you that our graduation had been rescheduled for late June. However, given the current health crisis, Northern Illnois University is not hosting any large events on the campus prior to Aug. 1. This means that our rescheduled graduation date in June is no longer possible."

The graduation ceremonies were originally scheduled for May 16 at the NIU Convocation Center.

Originally, the rescheduled graduation date for both schools had been listed as Saturday, June 27, at the NIU Convocation Center, but following the news from DeKalb, administrators are working on alternative plans, Sparlin wrote.

"Our administrative teams are working together to research and develop alternative plans, with the health and safety of our students, staff and families being our highest priority," he continued.

Sparlin asked for the "continued patience" of students and their families, as they work on a solution.

"Graduation is such an important and monumental moment for students; we will do our best to provide a memorable occasion that honors our graduates."

Information on graduation plans will be provided to students and families once they are finalized.

The NIU Events and Conference Services Department could not be reached for contact.
