A Will County jail inmate pulled down a mask he was wearing and coughed on a guard’s face, police said.

Jacob J. Bogdan, 20, of Chicago was charged with felony aggravated assault in connection with the incident, court records show.

On Friday, Bogdan and a few other inmates were escorted back to a pod inside the Will County jail before the incident occurred, said sheriff spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer.

The inmates were wearing masks as required by the sheriff’s office to minimize potential exposure to coronavirus, Hoffmeyer said. The inmates wear masks whenever they are moved within the jail, she said.

A guard saw Bogdan and the other inmates coming down a hallway and moved out of their way, Hoffmeyer said. Bogdan stepped out of line, pulled down his mask and coughed in her face, she said. Bogdan was about a foot away from her, she said.

Bogdan later said he thought it would be funny, she said. He was trying to make the guard think he had the coronavirus, she said.

Hoffmeyer said Bogdan has not shown any symptoms for the coronavirus since he was booked into the jail on March 16. Before that day, he was in the Cook County jail, where he also showed no symptoms of the virus, she said.

Bogdan was initially in jail on a $25,000 bond but a judge increased that bond to $75,000 following the aggravated assault charge, Hoffmeyer said.

Bogdan was taken to Will County jail on charges alleging he violated a protective order by sending a Facebook friend request and video of threats to a protected party, court records show.
