New Lenox commuters will likely see a new apartment complex next to the new Metra Station next year.
The New Lenox Village Board Monday night approved the latest proposal for a multi-building Lincoln Station Apartments development at Route 30 and Prairie Road.
While the new owners of New Lenox Development Company will need to come back to the board for final approvals, trustees did approve a special use permit for the project. A five-building, 220-unit apartment complex with a clubhouse is proposed for the site adjacent to the Metra Station project.
A special use was granted by the village to previous owners in 2015, after months-long opposition from residents who feared an increase in traffic. But the owners never started the project and the village in 2017 denied a third request to have the special use permit extended.
Trustee Annette Bowden said after the meeting that she does not expect any delays this time.
Only one resident spoke Monday, saying she “did not see the benefit” in the development.
When the board first heard the new proposal last month, Trustee Dave Smith expressed concern about the density of the development and impact on traffic.
The developers later commissioned a traffic study, the results of which indicate that the delay at the Prairie Road and Route 30 traffic light would increase by only one to two seconds, Assistant Village Administrator Robin Ellis said.
Ellis said that NLDC expects to start construction this fall — pending final approvals — and have the complex completed by September 2021.
