One woman was killed and another woman and man were injured in a Thursday night wreck on Route 126 in Plainfield, police said.
Police and firefighters were dispatched to Route 126 between Meadow Lane and Indian Boundary Road about 9 p.m. for a "serious traffic crash," police said.
"Upon arrival, officers discovered a Toyota Camry and a BMW X5 involved in the traffic crash with a substantial amount of damage to both vehicles," police said.
The driver of the Camry, a 37-year-old man, "sustained life-threatening injuries" and was "airlifted to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove," police said.
A passenger in the Camry was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, police said.
The Will County Coroner's Office identified the woman as 35-year-old Sarah Cruz of Spring Valley.
The driver of the BMW, a 58-year-old woman, also suffered injuries, police said, and was taken to Rush Copley Medical Center in Aurora.
Police determined the driver of the Camry crossed into the wrong lane.
"Preliminary investigation of the traffic crash indicates the Toyota was traveling [east] on Route 126, just east of Meadow Lane, when he lost control of the vehicle," police said. "The vehicle entered the westbound traffic lanes of Route 126 and was subsequently struck on the passenger side by the BMW, which was traveling [west]on Route 126."
Route 126 was shut down during the investigation of the crash by the Will County Sheriffs Department Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit.
