Local orchards win honors for cider

BLOOMINGTON — Cider produced by Denise and Keith Boggio of Putnam County and Craig Tanner of Tanners Orchard recently earned high honors.

The Illinois State Horticulture Society sponsored its 31st annual Illinois and National Sweet Cider Contests and the 18th annual National Hard Cider Contest, in conjunction with the Illinois Specialty Crops, Agritourism and Organic Conference this winter in Springfield.

• Denise and Keith Boggio of Boggio’s Orchard and Produce in Granville were awarded the Midwest Cider of Merit Second Runner-up. Midwest Cider of Merit First Runner-up was awarded to Mike and Jenna Spychal of Jonamac Orchard in Malta.

• Craig Tanner of Tanners Orchard in Speer produced the No. 1 overall-rated cider at this year’s contest, winning both the National and Illinois contests. Craig used Honeycrisp, Golden Delicious, Jonathan, Red Delicious, Braeburn, Fuji and Gala apples to make his winning cider. Big Bear Orchard of Grand Ridge took second place.
