DEKALB – The St. Charles East boys bowling team finished in fourth place at the Sycamore Sectional on Saturday at Mardi Gras Lanes, qualifying for state.
The Saints bowled a team score of 6,337, behind Vernon Hills (6,450), Hononegah (6,443) and Harlem (6,399). The top six teams advanced to this weekend's state meet in O'Fallon.
St. Charles East sophomore Edgar Burgos, who won the individual state title as a freshman, hopes to duplicate that this week. Burgos came in at fourth at sectionals with a 1,386 series.
“Today was a good day numbers wise, but I could have done better especially the team could have done better," Burgos said. "The important part was making it to state."
Other St. Charles East bowlers included Edward Burgos who finished 10th with a 1,320 series and Nicholas Cutrara, 21st with a 1,287 series. Connor Johnson bowled a 1,243. Vernon Hills' Jacob Gates was the sectional champion with a 1,459 series.
“The season has been the best season we’ve ever had at St. Charles East,” Edgar Burgos said.
Jeff Gasso and Sycamore qualified for state by taking sixth with a team score of 6,161.
“It’s very important (to qualify) because I’ve never been to state. I really want to see what it’s like there,” said Gasso.
Gasso finished with 1,358, first on the team and was seventh place individually at the Sectional.
“If we go as a team (to state), we bring the family with and that’s the whole team that I call family,” said Gasso.
