Gun attack at Conway's Barber Shop in Lockport Township: cops

A gunman shot up Conway’s Barber Shop outside Lockport, firing twice inside the business before walking outside and putting four more bullets through a window, police said.

No one was injured in the Friday afternoon gun attack at popularly known Conway's, which now bears the name Conway's Hi-Styling Beauty Center.

Four people were inside the barbershop at the time of the shooting, said Deputy Chief Dan Jungles of the Will County Sheriff's Office, but none were injured.

The gunman, Cartier Collins, 28, was apprehended a short distance away after Will County deputies spotted him standing in a treeline on the east side of State Street, Jungles said. Deputies also located a stolen handgun, Jungles said.

“Many people within the neighborhood were able to observe and identify the offender and point out his whereabouts,” according to the sheriff’s office.

Numerous 911 callers provided descriptions of the gunman and his whereabouts as he fled the shooting, Jungles said.

Deputies apprehended Collins on Riverview Avenue east of Grandview Avenue, Jungles said.

He was taken into custody without incident, he said.

Colliins was booked into the Will County jail on probable cause of aggravated discharge of a firearm and possession of a stolen firearm, said Jungles, who noted a motive for the shooting remains unknown.

"He would not talk to us," Jungles said of Collins.

Percy Conway, the owner of the barbershop, said he wasn't at his shop at the time of the shooting and does not believe his business was targeted in the gun attack.

Conway stressed that he was just glad no one was wounded or killed in the shooting.

“Nobody got hurt," Conway said. That’s the main thing.”

Conway said his shop has been in business for about 60 years.

“It will be a little scar but no big scar,” he said of the broad daylight shooting.

“It’s an isolated incident," he said. "We don’t have that type of nonsense here.”

Conway said a barber who saw the shooter didn’t want to comment except to say, “The shootings needs to stop.”
