What is 'Torsk'?

To the Editor:

What is "Torsk" you ask? The word Torsk means cod in Danish, Norwegian and Swedish. The cod is boiled and served with melted butter. What? No beer batter? No French Fries and tartar sauce? Torsk is also sometimes referred to as "Poor Man's Lobster". And it's not to be confused with Lutefisk, which is something that Norwegians serve to unwelcome guests at Christmas time. Did you also know that in the Norwegian culture, butter is considered a vegetable and is usually served as a side dish?

The Fern Dell Historic Association will be serving a Torsk dinner on Saturday Nov. 2 at 5 p.m. at the Newark Firehouse located at 101 E. Main St. Dinner includes cod, boiled new potatoes, cole slaw, a vegetable, dinner roll and beverage. One piece dinners are $11 and two piece dinners are $13. Pre-sales are preferred by calling 815-214-0939. Tickets are also available at the door.

Besides being delicious, the Torsk dinner is a good place to try out that new Ole and Lena joke you've been saving for a crowd. Don't forget to save room for dessert.
