High school sports roundup for Monday, Sept. 30

Jacobs won pivotal matches at No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles to hold off Cary-Grove, 5-2, in a dual meet between unbeaten Fox Valley Conference girls tennis teams Monday.

The Golden Eagles’ Laura Santa Ines edged Sara Greenwald, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4, at No. 3 singles. Jacobs’ No. 2 doubles team of Lindsey Taylor and Tania Vesselinova held off Olivia Schladt and Jenna Briggs, 1-6, 7-6, 7-5, for another tight victory.

Jacobs is 6-0 in FVC dual meets; C-G is 6-1.

Jacobs’ Chloe Siegfort (No. 1) and Kaya Trumbo (No. 2) won at singles. The Eagles’ No. 1 doubles team of Lindsay Cunningham and Isha Desai also won.

C-G got victories at No. 3 doubles (Grace O’Malley and Kate Larry) and No. 4 doubles (Chloe Sorensen and Mary Greenwald).

Woodstock North 6, Woodstock 1: At Woodstock, Aly Cullotta, Sophia Ferru and Anika Treadway did not give up a game in their singles matches as the Thunder defeated the Blue Streaks in their Kishwaukee River Conference dual meet.

North won for the 18th consecutive time in dual competition. Kirsten Morey and Juliana Conrad (No. 1), Kaitlyn Mauch and Maggie Thomas (No. 3), and Bethany Lintner and Gaby Galindo (No. 4) also had wins for the Thunder. Lintner and Galindo overcame a slow start and won 11 consecutive games for the win.

Woodstock’s victory came at No. 2 doubles from Ashley Peralta and Sarah Gaspari.

BOYS SOCCER

Woodstock North 6, Richmond-Burton 5 (shootout): At Richmond, the Thunder's Jack Duenas scored with 30 seconds remaining in regulation, and North (5-7, 5-2) went on to win a penalty-kick shootout over the Rockets (12-5, 6-2).

R-B led, 5-1, at halftime before the Thunder put together a furious second half. Eliel Reynoso, Alan Castanon and Duenas scored to cut the lead to 5-4. Duenas then scored the tying goal.

Through the first penalty-kick round, the teams tied at 3, forcing a sudden-death round. Both teams’ first shooters scored, then Thunder goalkeeper Riley Bronson made a save, and Javier Perez scored for the game-winner.

Jacob Hernandez had North’s first-half goal, and Damien Alonzo had two assists.

Ethan Demers scored three goals for the Rockets. Hayden Rudkin and Liam Weck each had a goal, and Peyton May had three assists.

“It was incredible,” Thunder coach John Liuzzi said. “We had a heart-to-heart at halftime. R-B made a statement in the first half. It wasn’t how they wanted it to end. I could not be more proud of my team.”

Woodstock, 1, Marengo 0: At Marengo, the Blue Streaks (13-4, 7-0) still have not allowed a goal in KRC competition as they blanked the Indians (2-11, 1-6).

Kaleb Robey scored an unassisted goal for the Streaks. Stephan Turskey was only required to make one save in goal for Woodstock.

Harvard 2, Johnsburg 1: At Johnsburg, Roger Hernandez and Angel Romo scored in the first half as the Hornets (4-8-1, 3-4) defeated the Skyhawks (1-12, 0-8) in their KRC game.

Manny Mercado had an assist on Romo’s goal. Aldo Popoca had seven saves in goal for the Hornets.

Harvest Christian 2, Marian Central 0: At Woodstock, the Hurricanes (7-8) fell to the Lions in their nonconference game.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Johnsburg 2, Harvard 1: At Johnsburg, Shannon Flynn supplied four kills and six aces to help the Skyhawks to a KRC win, 22-25, 25-20, 25-19, over the Hornets.

Hayley Schmidt had five kills, Alexandra Burke added three kills and five blocks, and Makayla Huff had 11 assists.

For Harvard, Desiree Brady had seven kills and two aces. Dianayeli Pleti led the defense with 19 digs, and Alex Cooke had 13 assists.

Woodstock North 2, Richmond-Burton 0: At Richmond, the Rockets earned a KRC win, 25-19, 25-14, behind 13 kills and eight digs from Brooke Amann.

Alyssa Wickersheim added six kills, five aces and five digs. Kylie Schulze recorded 22 assists and six digs, and Kaityln Wichersheim had three aces and three digs.

GIRLS GOLF

Prairie Ridge 193, Lake Zurich 194: At Chalet Hills in Oakwood Hills, Elizabeth Tucker's 43 led the Wolves in a narrow nonconference win.

McHenry 177, Grant 256: At Boone Creek in Bull Valley, Sarah Fergus shot 40 to lead the Warriors to a nonconference victory.

Jocelyn Currie (45), Carly Wolf (46) and Kelsey Morrison (46) rounded out the scoring for McHenry.

Katie Gilmore carded a 45, Alexis Baron shot 52, and Elise King had a 53.
