Police: Shorewood man gave victim a lethal dose of fentanyl

Saul Nunez

A Shorewood man was arrested and charged with drug-induced homicide in connection with the drug overdose death of 25-year-old man in 2017.

Shorewood Police Deputy Chief Jason Barten said detectives have been investigating the death of Christopher Shanine since June 23, 2017.

Shanine was found dead from a drug overdose in the Kipling Estates subdivision of Shorewood, according to the Will County Coroner’s Office.

The investigation has resulted in the arrest of Saul Nunez, 41, of the 800 block of Diamond Head Drive.

Nunez has been charged with possession of fentanyl and drug-induced homicide, accused of providing Shanine a lethal dose of fentanyl.

Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is 80 to 100 times stronger than morphine, according to the Drug Enforcement Administration.

Nunez was booked into the Will County jail about 1:30 p.m. Saturday. He is being held on a $2.5 million bond.

Barten said Shanine’s body was found less than 75 feet from the front door of Nunez’s residence. Shanine appeared to have fallen from his bicycle on Diamond Head Drive, police said.

Barten said the police have gathered social media and cellphone evidence through search warrants that point to Nunez as the person who provided fentanyl to Shanine.

He said the two men were acquaintances.

The Will County State’s Attorney’s Office’s drug unit assisted the Shorewood police with the investigation, Barten said.
