Records: Child luring suspect works as a doctor

A man who police said showed a girl sexual photos on his phone is licensed in the state of Vermont to practice medicine, according to online medical records.

Nicholas M. Cox, 29, has been charged with distributing explicit material to a minor. He was arrested by Will County Sheriff’s deputies after a woman in Wilmington said Cox showed inappropriate photos on his phone to a neighbor’s daughter, police said.

Cox is listed as a third-year emergency medicine resident on the University of Missouri's School of Medicine website.

According to Cox’s Facebook profile, he worked as a physician with the University of Missouri Hospital.

At a hearing Tuesday, Cox’s bond was set at $40,000. As a condition of his bond, he was not allowed to contact two individuals or two homes on Lakewood Drive in Wilmington.

His bond was modified to allow him to travel to and from Vermont for work purposes. Cox has a physician’s license in Vermont and he specializes in emergency medicine, according to the Vermont Board of Medical Practice.

Cox's primary practice address is listed as the Rutland Regional Medical Center in Vermont, according to National Provider Identifier registry records.

Cox’s attorney, Larry Wharrie, did not return a call Friday.

Cox’s mother, who paid his bond, hung up the phone when contacted by The Herald-News.

Cox has been out of the Will County jail since Tuesday.
