Hinckley’s Engel awarded P.E.O. STAR Scholarship for 2019-20

Lauren Engel, a recent graduate of Hinckley Big-Rock High School, has been awarded the prestigious P.E.O. STAR Scholarship for the 2019-20 academic year.

Engel is the daughter of Jama and Brad Engel of Hinckley. She was recommended for the scholarship by P.E.O. Chapter IV of DeKalb, which was founded in 1955. Engel will attend Illinois State University this fall with a major in music therapy.

The scholarship was presented at the HBR Awards Ceremony on May 8 by Mary Pritchard, STAR Scholarship chair of Chapter IV.

The P.E.O. STAR Scholarship is a $2,500 award based on excellence in leadership, extracurricular activities, community service, academics and potential for future success.

The program is open to young women who are citizens or legal permanent residents of the U.S. or Canada and who are graduating high school seniors at the time of application. A student must be recommended by a P.E.O. chapter.

The P.E.O. Sisterhood, founded in 1869, is an international philanthropic and educational organization that promotes increased opportunities for higher education for women.

There are nearly 6,000 local chapters with almost 250,000 initiated members.
