Mr. Beefy's in Fox River Grove was closed this week, fate unclear

A popular restaurant was closed Tuesday and Wednesday, and a note has been posted on its entrance thanking customers for being a part of it.

“Many thanks to my staff, customers and the village of Fox River Grove[.] Thank you for being a part of Mr. Beefy’s,” the letter reads.

Dan Skoubis, owner of Mr. Beefy’s, 512 Northwest Highway, and nearby Villa Bleu Tavern & Restaurant – which was open Wednesday – declined to comment on the matter.

Village Administrator Derek Soderholm said Mr. Beefy’s appears closed.

“There is no requirement that a business notify us that they’re closed,” he said.

Land that serves as home to the two neighborhood eateries has not yet been sold to make room for a Culver’s, Soderholm said.

“The parties are still negotiating,” Soderholm said

In December, the Fox River Grove Village Board unanimously approved a petitioner’s proposal to build a Culver’s drive-thru on land that houses Mr. Beefy’s and Villa Bleu. Trustees unanimously approved the plans of Barry Himmelfarb, a Culver’s franchisee who is in negotiations to buy the land from Skoubis.

Soderholm has said if and when the land is sold, the village must approve the building plans before construction of a Culver’s can commence.

During a December meeting, several residents objected to a Culver’s opening at 512-516 Route 14, a stretch that often faces traffic jams.

If Himmelfarb acquires the properties and builds a Culver’s, the restaurant would be open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Himmelfarb runs Culver’s restaurants in Woodstock, Hoffman Estates and Schaumburg.

Culver’s is a Wisconsin-based fast-casual chain specializing in cheese curds, butterburgers and frozen custard.
