Romeoville mayor appears at C2E2 as Hydra villain

No, that’s not a Nazi uniform he’s wearing in the photo on his Facebook page, Romeoville Mayor John Noak said. But that is actor Paul Rudd standing with the mayor, his wife and son. Noak posted the photo Saturday from C2E2, also known as the Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo.

“Very fun when Paul Rudd thinks your family cosplay is really good,” Noak said in the Facebook post. “This is most compliments and photo requests we’ve ever received.”

A first glance at the photo might lead some to wonder if the mayor is dressed in the uniform of a German Nazi commander from World War II.

Not so, Noak said.

“There are no Nazi insignia on it at all,” Noak said. “It’s a Hydra costume.”

And, that’s Noak’s 7-year-old son, Sebastian, in the photo dressed up as Captain America and his wife, Jennifer, in costume as Peggy Carter – all of which ties together for followers of Captain America, the superhero whom, at times with support from his love interest Peggy Carter, combats the forces of Hydra in the world of Marvel Comics.

Perhaps the most fearsome of the Hydra is Red Skull, whom Noak said he was trying to impersonate. The uniform does bear the questionable resemblance, however, since Red Skull and Hydra are traced to Nazi Germany in Marvel Comics lore. Noak said he feels compelled to explain to his son.

“We use the opportunity to talk with our son about why the Nazis are bad and why it’s important to know that,” he said.

They made a second costumed appearance over the weekend with Noak dressed as Spider-Man Noir.

“Spider-Man Noir,” he said, “beats up Nazis.”
