A Chicago man and woman were arrested for using gift cards that were re-encoded with stolen credit card numbers, police said.

About 2 p.m. Wednesday, officers went to the Walmart at 2424 W. Jefferson St. after receiving a report of two people who were in the process of committing identity theft, Joliet police Sgt. Christopher Botzum said in an email.

Deyona Tucker, 27, of the 4000 block of West Gladys Avenue and Aaron Dixon, 27, of the 1800 block of North Mayfield Avenue allegedly had in their possession gift cards that were re-encoded with stolen credit card numbers, Botzum said.

“Tucker and Dixon purchased various gift cards through the self-checkout lane with the re-encoded gift cards,” Botzum said.

Tucker and Dixon were arrested by the officers without incident on charges of identity theft and possession of altered cards. The Will County State’s Attorney’s Office charged Tucker and Dixon with continuing a financial criminal enterprise.

Tucker also was arrested on a charge of identity theft for incidents that allegedly occurred at the same Walmart store Feb. 13 and Feb. 15. In both incidents, Tucker allegedly bought gift cards through the self-checkout lane with re-encoded gift cards, Botzum said.

Tucker is being held at the Will County jail on a $10,000 bond, of which she’ll need to post 10 percent in order to be released. No bond appeared to be set for Dixon, according to the county jail log and court records.
