Lucky Penny's sandwich shop to open in Cary

Lucky Penny’s – an upscale sandwich shop tied to Lucky Bernie’s locations in Huntley, Woodstock and Spring Grove – is slated to open in Cary this year, and it could be as early as March.

The restaurant-gaming stop already is registered on the Cary-Grove Area Chamber of Commerce’s website, where residents can find this description: “Opening soon in Cary in the Jewel shopping center by Athletico. Lucky Bernie’s is a full-service bar offering deli sandwiches, soups, salads and a gaming café.”

Cary Mayor Mark Kownick said the same owners behind Lucky Bernie’s are planning to operate the new restaurant under a different name.

Lynn Caccavallo, executive director of the Chamber, said Lucky Bernie’s owners hope to open in March.

“They joined [the Chamber] a year ago,” Caccavallo said. “I’m personally excited about it. It’s sandwiches and soups and salads, and they have some nice music they bring on the weekend.”

Kownick said the deli opening in Cary represents a business boom quietly sweeping the village.

“It shows that Cary is a sought-after place to do business in,” Kownick said. “We’re looking for things to add to our mix.”

The wine menu includes sangria, rare wines, ports and sparkling wines. The craft beer selections feature many brews local to the Midwest and the state, such as Crystal Lake Brewing and Wild Onion Brewery.

On the deli side, patrons at other locations have enjoyed options spanning 20 types of Boar’s Head meats and 12 kinds of Boar’s Head cheeses. There’s almost a pound of meat and cheese on each sandwich the shops make.

• Huntley – 9810 N. Route 47; open from 8 a.m. to 1 a.m. Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 2 a.m. Saturday and
9 a.m. to 2 a.m. Sunday.

• Spring Grove – 2450 Route 12; open from 8 a.m. to 1 a.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 2 a.m. Friday through Sunday.

• Woodstock – 11605 Catalpa Lane; open from 8 a.m. to 1 a.m. Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday and 9 a.m. to 2 a.m. Sunday.
