NWS issues flood warning for Kankakee River near Wilmington

Ice jams on the Kankakee River near Wilmington have caused the National Weather Service to issue a flood warning.

The warning is in effect through noon Monday, and applies to Grundy and Will counties, according to the service.

Ice jams can result in rapid fluctuations in water levels with little or no warning, according to the service.

Ice jams can be very localized, and may not affect all locations along the river. Residents in low-lying, flood-prone areas should remain alert for possible flooding, according to the service.

Water levels on the Kankakee River near Wilmington were at 5.5 feet as of Saturday morning, according to the service. Flood stage is 6.5 feet. Drivers should turn around if they encounter a flooded road.

Grundy and Will counties also are expected to see snow Saturday afternoon and evening. Snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches are expected along and south of Interstates 88 and 290, with about 1 inch possible to the north, according to the service.
