Three men – two of DeKalb and another from Chicago – have been charged with stealing cars in the northeast part of DeKalb.
Damien D. Bolden, 19, and Calvin L. Spells, 28, both of the 900 block of Oak Street in DeKalb, and Shyjuan S.R. Cooks, 20, of the first block of East 101st Place in Chicago, all have been charged with at least six counts of possession of stolen motor vehicles.
Court records show police received a report at 7:22 a.m. Wednesday that a 2010 gold Subaru Outback was stolen in the 800 block of North 14th Street. A 2005 Jeep was reported stolen about half an hour later in the
700 block of Sunnymeade Trail, and officers saw those vehicles, as well as a Chevrolet Impala reported to have been spotted earlier with at least three men in the car, in the 1400 block of Cambria Drive – about a block from where a vehicle was reported stolen Monday.
The Subaru and Chevy were pulled over Wednesday in the 1000 block of East Lincoln Highway, but the Jeep sped off, court records show. A post on the DeKalb Police Department’s Facebook page states that the Jeep was recovered in North Aurora.
Cooks was driving the Subaru, with Bolden in the passenger seat, while Spells was driving the Chevy, and they admitted they’d planned to drive the vehicles to Chicago, according to the records. They said that Bolden confessed to stealing another vehicle June 12.
Because DeKalb County Judge Philip Montgomery said Spells has numerous previous convictions and active cases pending, including crimes involving firearms, drugs and gang contact, he’s been held in DeKalb County Jail on $25,000 bond – Spells said he couldn’t post $2,500 to be released.
Both Bolden and Cooks were released from custody on their signatures, although they were both placed on pretrial supervision. They are due back in court at 9 a.m. Feb. 15, while a motion to reduce Spells' bond is scheduled to be heard at 9 a.m.
