The Newman boys basketball team held off a fourth-quarter rally by the Rockets and beat Rockridge 48-47 on Tuesday in Taylor Ridge.
The Comets led 13-5 after one quarter, 25-18 at halftime, and 35-29 after three before the Rockets opened the fourth quarter with an 8-2 run to tie the game at 37.
But Newman pulled out the win.
Devon House scored 19 for the Comets. Jake Ackman added nine, and Jake Terveer scored eight.
Jensen Whiteman scored 20 points for Rockridge.
Dixon 65, Rochelle 52: Beau Bailey scored 28 points as the Dukes pulled away in the second and third quarters to win at Rochelle.
Aaron Duncan scored 13 points, and Derian Duncan added 10.
Hinckley-Big Rock 62, AFC 56: The Raiders scored 32 points in the fourth quarter, but could not overcome an early deficit in a home loss.
Hinckley-Big Rock led 15-5 after one quarter and 31-14 at halftime.
AFC had 10 different players score, led by Jesus Aguilar with 12. Malachi Ball-Alexander added nine and Henry Rod scored eight.
Girls basketball
Eastland 61, Galena 40: Lydia Coatney had 15 points to reach the 1,000-point mark for her career, the eighth Eastland girl to reach that mark, and Erin Henze scored 17 as the Cougars won at home.
Eastland knocked down seven 3-pointers in the game, with Henze and Coatney each pouring in three. Henze had five rebounds, four steals and five assists. Karlie Krogman and Meredith Janssen each had five rebounds.
Eastland led 13-9 after one quarter, then scored 21 points in the second quarter to pull away.
Amboy 57, Forreston 47: The Clippers got 23 points and six assists from Abi Payne in an NUIC win over the Cardinals at home.
Breanna Fisher added 10 points. Kyleigh Donna, Mallory Powers and Noelle Jones each grabbed seven rebounds.
AFC 52, Milledgeville 21: Jaynee Prestegaard and Camdyn Penick both had double-doubles as the Raiders won an NUIC East game on the road.
Prestegaard finished with 18 points and 11 rebounds, and Penick had 18 points and 10 steals for AFC. Tristan Munroe added 10 points.
Samantha Hartman scored nine points to pace the Missiles.
Wrestling
Sterling 64, Kaneland 15: The Golden Warriors had little trouble with the Knights at Musgrove Fieldhouse.
Julian Rodriguez (120 pounds), Kolten Smith (145) and Cade Lyons (285) all scored pins, with Smith needing just 17 seconds and Lyons finishing off his bout in 54 seconds. Mauricio Garcia (138) and Isaiah Figueroa (152) won via tech fall.
Panthers split: Erie-Prophetstown split a pair of matches in Oregon, defeating the host Hawks 45-27 and losing to Le-Win/Stockton 50-16.
Gabe Friedrichsen won a pair of bouts for the Panthers, at 182 and 195 pounds.
Oregon also lost to Lena-Winslow/Stockton, 55-16. Andrew Herbst (106) won two bouts for the Hawks.
Comets split: Newman defeated Rockridge 54-24 and lost to Orion 34-31 in matches held in Sterling.
Mason Glaudel (120), Kyle Tunink (145) and Brody Ivey (160) won two bouts for Newman.
Boys bowling
Yorkville 3,116, Sterling 2,879: The Golden Warriors held a slight lead after the first game, but couldn’t keep pace with the Foxes at Blackhawk Lanes.
Carter Schlegel rolled a team-high 610 series for Sterling, including a 234 first game. Jordan Glazier had a 519 series. Andrew Doughty (462), Nathaniel Stout (451), Ethan Melcher (430) and Cabot McLaughlin (407) also rolled series for the Warriors.
Zack Nauman rolled two games of 227 en route to a 624 series for Yorkville.
Oregon 3,461, Dixon 3,318: The Hawks edged the Dukes at Town and Country Lanes in Mt. Morris.
Austin Strite’s 686 series led the way for Oregon with games of 227, 243 and 216. Jacob Smith had a 209 game in a 593 series. Eddie Buttens had a 511 series. Justin Poole rolled a 203 game in a 559 series. Charlie Bachman had a 543 series, and Kyle Strite had a 569 series which included a 251 game.
For Dixon, Tyler VanQuathem had the top series, a 618, and top game with a 223. He also had a 202 game. Kade Fulton had a 205 game in a 568 series. Trevor White had a 221 game in a 584 series. Jacob Wickert had games of 207 and 215 in a 561 series.
Girls bowling
Sterling 3,138, LaSalle-Peru 3,065: The Golden Warriors stormed back in the third game to top the Cavaliers at Blackhawk Lanes.
Zoey Paone led the way with a 601 series for Sterling, while Olivia Zinanni was a pin back at 600 – including a high game of 220. Grace Schultz (526), Kyleigh Glazier (526), Kylie Bresley (446) and Elayna Felder (442) also rolled series for the Warriors.
Clara Ferrari paced L-P with a 586 series, including a first game of 224.
Dixon 3,119, Oregon 2,924: The Duchesses led by just 17 pins going into the third game at Town and Country Lanes in Mt Morris, but knocked down 1,121 in that final game to pull away for the win.
Allison Bay’s 668 series, including games of 225, 199 and 244, led the way for Dixon. Tori Baker had a 578 series, including a 203 game. Alyssa Bonnette had a 200 game in a 557 series.
Rebbeca Meyers had a 231 game and a 601 series for the Hawks. Sammantha Meyers had a 223 game and a 542 series. Hannah Kaltenbrun had a 202 game and a 541 series.
Boys swimming & diving
Sterling 155.5, Rockford Christian 109, Kewanee 16.5: The Golden Warriors started their season with a dominant win at the Duis Center, winning 11 of 12 events.
Sterling’s 200 medley relay of Reiley Austin, Michael Garland, Jack Wike and Calvin Sandefer won in 1:43.63.
Sandefer also won the 50 freestyle (22.13) and 500 freestyle (4:59.17), and teamed with Garland, Mason Adams and Isaiah Moorman to claim the 200 freestyle relay (1:40.79).
Austin also won the 100 backstroke (57.34) and 200 freestyle (1:57.05). Wike took first in the 100 butterfly (55.92) and 200 IM (2:03.87).
Garland also won the 100 freestyle in 53.65 seconds. Moorman teamed with Cristian Garza, Mikio Martinez and Luke Valentino to take the 400 freestyle relay (4:20.19).
Brayden Wolf won the diving event with a score of 193.45.
Men’s basketball
Sauk Valley 78, Truman 57: Micah Kendrick hit 4 of 5 3-pointers, scored 13 points, dished nine assists, and grabbed four rebounds as the Skyhawks won at home.
Jyaire Robinson also had 13 points for SVCC, Markel Hudson had 11 points, six rebounds and three blocks, and Fred Brown added 10 points.
