The award-winning group, The Oak Ridge Boys, will be performing at the Rialto Square Theatre at 7 p.m. Nov. 25.
The Oak Ridge Boys have been creating country hits for decades, have scored 12 gold, three platinum and one double platinum album and have more than 30 Top Ten hits.
Richard Sterban, a longtime member of the Oak Ridge Boys, spoke with Herald-News reporter Alex Ortiz about their career and his time singing with Elvis Presley ahead of his group’s performance in Joliet.
Ortiz: You guys have had such a long and storied career. Could you tell me about how you guys got together?
Sterban: We’ve now been in existence for over 45 years as this combination. William Lee Golden ... he joined the Oak Ridge Boys in 1965. That is hard to believe. And then our lead singer, Duane Allen, came one year later in 1966. I joined the ORB in 1972. Joe Bonsall, our tenor singer, came one year later in 1973. So we’ve established a lot of history.
Ortiz: You also sang with Elvis? How did that happen?
Sterban: I have a book out called “From Elvis to Elvira” and basically, if you’re an Elvis fan, there’s great Elvis stories in there. If you’re an Oak Ridge Boys fan, there’s great Oak Ridge Boys stories in there, but it’s really my personal story. The times I spent with Elvis, were very special. There’s no doubt about it. Back then, Elvis was the biggest star in the world, and his tour was the biggest tour in the music business.
Ortiz: So what can fans expect when they see you in Joliet?
Sterban: ... Really two shows almost for the price of one. We come out in the beginning for about 45 minutes. We do our regular music. After the intermission, we will then come out and do a complete Christmas show. We try to find a nice mixture of traditional familial Christmas songs ... and then we do some contemporary Christmas songs.
