Police: ‘Multiple items’ stolen from Menards

A Montgomery woman slipped “multiple items” from Menards into her purse and tried to leave the home improvement store without paying for them, but she was caught and detained by security guards, police said.

Officers were dispatched to the 2524 W. Jefferson St. store about 8 p.m. Monday, police said.

The officers were sent to investigate a report of a retail theft, Joliet police Sgt. Darrell Gavin said in an email.

Once the officers arrived, they found security personnel detaining 38-year-old Catherine Burson of the 2300 block of Thunder Gulch Road, police said.

“Staff stated that Burson concealed multiple items inside of her purse and attempted to leave the store without purchasing the items,” Gavin said.

“Burson was detained and police were notified,” Gavin said. “All stolen items were recovered on scene.”

Burson was placed under arrest, taken to the police department and processed. She was then booked into the Will County jail on a charge of theft.

Burson appeared in Will County court Tuesday afternoon, and her bond was set at $60,000. She remained in custody Tuesday evening.

Burson also faces three felony theft cases and one felony retail theft case in Kendall County. She was most recently charged in May with the retail theft and is scheduled to return to court for the case Oct. 12.

Burson also faces battery and unlawful restraint charges in Kendall County.

She was charged with unlawful restraint for allegedly refusing to allow a woman to leave her residence.
