Steve and Maribel Janjic, owners of SJM Autowerks, 6215 Factory Road, Crystal Lake, are looking to open a new auto repair shop at 9120 Trinity Drive in Lake in the Hills.
The business – which repairs domestic, imported, European and classic vehicles – got one step closer Monday when the village’s Planning and Zoning Commission recommended a conditional use permit for the shop to the Village Board.
An ordinance granting a conditional use for automotive services at the location will be considered during a Committee of the Whole meeting at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Lake in the Hills Village Hall, 600 Harvest Gate.
Before the doors open, the Janjics plan to update the interior with new bathrooms, a waiting area and a quiet room where customers can read or work, according to a petition.
Floors, lighting and landscaping will be updated, while the interior and exterior will get a new paint job.
“Our plan is to continually improve our business as well as the property,” Steve Janjic said in the petition.
There are three other general automotive repair shops in the area. Instead of being a hindrance to competing businesses, Steve Janjic said in the petition that their commitment to a top-of-the-line shop and great customer service will bring out the best in their competitors.
“Over the years, we will be updating when necessary to maintain the highest level facilities,” Steve Janjic said in the petition. “We believe that the improvements that will be done and the excellent service that we will be providing will encourage other businesses to do the same.”
The space previously housed an automotive service shop.
The area surrounding it predominately is business-oriented, except for the Crystal Lake Park District’s Racket Club to the north.
Steve Janjic said in the petition that all interior and exterior regulations and codes will be followed, including maintaining the sprinkler system; heating, ventilation and air conditioning; and electrical and plumbing units.
Used oil, antifreeze and tires are disposed of by licensed and insured contractors.
