GLEN ELLYN – Starting next month, Glen Ellyn residents will pay a little more to throw out their garbage.

Depending on what type of service they have, residents will see their rates increase annually between $1.32 and $6.84, Finance Director Christina Coyle told the Glen Ellyn Village Board during a special meeting July 16. Trustees unanimously approved the new rates.

The new rates will take effect Aug. 1. Residents who have curbside service and a 35-gallon container will see their monthly rates increase to $14.82, up from $14.68.

In 2017, the Village Board approved a five-year refuse contract with Republic Services. Subsequent to the board’s approval of the contract, Republic Services sold the village’s contract to Groot Inc., which is now the village’s refuse provider. The current contract ends in 2022 and includes annual rate increases effective in August of each year.

This year’s base rates will increase by 3 percent in accordance with the contract, Coyle said. Individual sticker prices also will be increasing slightly. The cost of leaf stickers will increase from $1.50 to $1.55, and refuse and lawn waste stickers will increase from $2.50 to $2.58.

Residents are required to put refuse stickers on household and electronic items. For example, two refuse stickers are required on a small electronic waste item.
