McHenry City Council to consider liquor license transfer for El Gordo Mexican Restaurant

The McHenry City Council will meet Monday to discuss a change in ownership for La Hacienda restaurant.

El Gordo Mexican Restaurant Inc. plans to buy the restaurant at 929 N. Front St. and has requested a transfer of La Hacienda’s liquor license. The license allows the business to sell wine, beer and liquor for customers to drink on-site.

Suly Morales, president of El Gordo Mexican Restaurant, wants to relocate the existing restaurant to McHenry.

The business previously operated at 103 Rand Road in Lakemoor, according to city documents.

Miguel Zavala, manager of the restaurant, will work with La Hacienda owners on the transition.

“The restaurant was previously located in Lakemoor, but we are moving the business to McHenry, where we hope to continue running an authentic Mexican restaurant for the local community,” Zavala said. “I hope that everything runs smoothly, and [I] look forward to working at the new location.”

The restaurant changed ownership June 1, according to city documents.

El Gordo Mexican Restaurant offers tacos, burritos, chile rellenos and a variety of Mexican steak, seafood, pork and chicken dishes, as well as a variety of drinks, according to its menu.

The council also will consider awarding a $373,358 contract to Copenhaver Construction Inc. for the Green Street bridge rehabilitation project, a $10,556 change order for engineering services to add intersection lighting to the Bull Valley Road multiuse pathway project and sign changes for the proposed Jexal’s restaurant and Speedway on South Route 31.

Huntley-based Jedco Investments LLC has submitted a request to the city of McHenry to develop Jexal’s, a restaurant with outdoor seating and entertainment at 1260 N. Green St., on the corner of Route 120.

A preliminary plan shows that the restaurant could be about 4,690 square feet on less than a quarter of an acre.

Council members will meet at 7 p.m. Monday at the McHenry Municipal Center, 333 S. Green St.
