Maple Park changes Golf Carts and Utility Terrain Vehicles ordinance

Golf carts, utility terrain vehicles to require permits, inspections

MAPLE PARK – Golf carts will continue to be welcomed in the village of Maple Park.

But they will require a permit from the village and will need to be inspected by the police department prior to being issued said permit.

The village of Maple Park board of trustees approved an amended ordinance, Golf Carts and Utility Terrain Vehicles, during its meeting May 1. A previous ordinance had been established in 2011.

“The ordinance will go into effect in 10 days,” said Kathy Curtis, Maple Park village president. “The police department will be open for inspections starting this Saturday.”

Inspections are available between 9 a.m. and noon on Saturdays and from 3 to 6 p.m. Tuesdays.

The ordinance states that no person shall operate a motorized golf cart or utility terrain vehicle without obtaining a permit from the village clerk. The aforementioned permit will be granted for a one-year period and can be renewed by May 31 of each year. The cost of the permit, $15, will include the inspection of the golf cart or utility terrain vehicle.

Permits will not be granted if certain conditions are not met. The golf cart or utility terrain vehicle must be inspected and approved by the chief of police or a designee prior to application for the permit. This is being done in order to ensure that the vehicle is safe to operate only on the village streets as outlined on the village map and is in compliance with the requirements of the ordinance. In addition, the applicant must provide evidence of insurance in compliance with the provision of the Illinois Statutes regarding liability insurance for passenger motor vehicles to be operated on roads in the state of Illinois.

Golf carts and utility terrain vehicles may only be operated on streets within the village of Maple Park, which have a speed limit of 25 miles per hour. They may be operated during the hours between sunset and sunrise as well as during daylight hours in designated areas only.

Golf carts and utility terrain vehicles require certain seating requirements as all children under the age of 13 must be securely fastened with a seat belt while the vehicle is in operation. Children that are unable to sit up on their own with a seat belt must be secured in a proper child safety seat.

A substantial list of the requirements will be available at villageofmaplepark.org and residents are directed to call 815-827-3309 with any questions.
