Police: Joliet woman hits man with car after he refuses to pay for a ride

Victim was hospitalized for a broken femur, police say

JOLIET – A Joliet woman allegedly ran her car into a man she previously was upset with when he refused to pay for a ride she gave him, police said.

About 3:21 p.m. Sunday, Helene Doss, 53, of the 400 block of South Joliet Street, was arrested and charged with aggravated battery, reckless driving and obstructing justice in connection with the incident.

On Sunday afternoon, police officers responded to Fourth Avenue and Richards street after receiving a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle.

Officers arrived at the scene and learned from witnesses that Doss, the driver of a silver Subaru Forester, was traveling south on Richards Street in the northbound lane when she struck a 49-year-old man walking on a median, Joliet Deputy Police Chief Ed Gregory said in an email.

The man was taken to Silver Cross Hospital for a broken femur and Doss’ vehicle was towed.

Gregory said that based on independent witness statements, Doss was arrested and charged with aggravated battery and reckless driving. She also was charged with obstruction of justice after allegedly refusing to cooperate with police booking procedures.

Earlier in the day, officers had settled a dispute between the man and Doss at McDonough and Chicago streets, Gregory said. Doss accused the man of refusing to pay for a ride she provided him.

The officers provided the man a ride to an address on Fourth Avenue to settle the dispute, Gregory said. Doss allegedly made a threat to the man before the officers gave him a ride.
