Police: Joliet man drags girlfriend at Star Inn, refuses to meet officers

JOLIET – A Joliet man allegedly dragged his girlfriend into a hotel room and refused to open the door to police officers who responded to a report of the alleged attack, authorities said.

Around 2:30 a.m., Joliet police were contacted by an anonymous man and went to perform a welfare check at the Star Inn after he allegedly saw a 28-year-old woman crying and being dragged into a room by her boyfriend, Michael Bergquist, 36, who lives at the 2219 W. Jefferson St. hotel.

Officers arrived at the Star Inn and spoke with Bergquist through a closed door, Joliet Deputy Police Chief Ed Gregory said in an email.

Through the window of the room, the officers could see visible signs of a disturbance and struggle that occurred, he said.

Bergquist was reportedly informed by the officers why they had come to his room and was told that they needed to check on both him and his girlfriend, who was crying, Gregory said.

However, Bergquist refused to open the door and all attempts to get him to open it failed, he said.

The officers used a pass key to enter the room, Gregory said. They arrested Bergquist after a short struggle, he said.

Bergquist’s girlfriend reportedly had visible signs of physical abuse but declined medical assistance.

Bergquist was booked into the Will County jail on charges of domestic battery and resisting a police officer.
