Jean Sawyer

SHEFFIELD — Jean B. Sawyer, 95, of Sheffield died at 10:15 p.m. Friday, Dec. 29, 2017, at Good Samaritan Society - Prophets Riverview in Prophetstown.

She was born Nov. 16, 1922, in Fitchburg, Mass., the daughter of Milo and Gladys (Farnsworth) Bacon. She married Dr. John R. Sawyer Nov. 17, 1943, in Norwood, Mass. They shared 50 years together. He preceded her in death in 1994.

She graduated from Norwood High School in Norwood, Mass. She also graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Art in Boston, Mass., where she met her husband, and later earned her bachelor’s degree from Kutztown University.

She worked at the Kutztown University bookstore for many years and later taught second grade at The Wyndcroft School in Pottstown, Pa.

Jean was a member of the Bureau Township Community Church, a prayer group and Bible study, and Kappa Delta Pi education honor society. She was an accomplished watercolor artist, pianist and church organist, and quilter. She  tutored many children in the Sheffield area and also taught piano lessons.

Survivors include three children, Alan (Eileen) Sawyer of Macungie, Pa., Starr (Joseph C.) McAlexander of Anna, Texas, and Lane (William) House of Sheffield; seven grandchildren, Christian (Stefenie) Sawyer of Allentown, Pa., J. Colby (Lori) McAlexander of Hawaii, Jeremy (Cherie) House of Sheffield, Joel (Heidi) Sawyer of Crystal Lake, Shane (Brandy) House of Bellevue, C. Gentry McAlexander of Garland, Texas, and Jessica (Douglas) LaFountain of Good Hope; 17 great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces in Massachusetts; and close family friends in Texas and Pennsylvania.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John; and one brother, David H. Bacon.

Services will be at noon Sunday, Jan. 7, at the Bureau Township Community Church in rural Princeton with the Rev. Patrick Jones officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services in the church. Burial will be in the Manlius Cemetery in Manlius.
